Electric drive Print
Due to ongoing public and governmental pressures for more environmentally friendly and fuel efficient means of transportation, automotive industry, especially in public transportation, is turning to electric driven vehicles.

Perhaps the most promising near-term solution is a Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV) technology.

Design concepts Print
There are two major design concepts of electric driven vehicles. The first employs a centralised electric motor and a conventional mechanical powertrain to transfer power to the driven wheels. This concept currently dominates in exsisting electric and hybrid electric vehicles.

The second concept, called direct drive, employs separate electric motors for each driven wheel. Since power is transferred to the wheels in electric form there is no need for mechanical powertrain, resulting in higher power efficiency and lower mass of a vehicle. Another advantage of direct drive over conventional powertrain is lower maintenance.
